Tour Details
Gear up to be immersed in a true Wild West experience at one of Nevada’s richest and most notorious gold mines. It’s lawlessness once reached a point that Federal troops were stationed nearby to establish and maintain order!
In the tiny ghost town of Nelson, tales abound of feuds, claim jumping, disastrous floods, vigilante justice, and fortunes both won and lost. Your certified adventure guide will give you the colorful history of this remote, once-thriving community and point out unique features of the desert landscape.
You'll tour the Techatticup gold mine – considered by many to be the oldest, richest and most famous gold mine in Nevada – with a local expert. Afterwards, roam the deserted streets of Nelson to explore a private collection of antique cars and memorabilia set amidst a stunning canyon backdrop. Photographers are drawn to the town’s incredible photo opportunities, many coming come straight out of actual film sets!
Along the way, check out an abundance of desert plants like the Teddy Bear Cholla. They look soft enough to hug, but this field of teddy bears will hug you right back, in a prickly way you won’t soon forget!
A short drive from the mine cuts across rugged canyonlands, providing dramatic views of rock walls and stone formations. The next stop is Nelson’s Landing, overlooking a picturesque stretch of the Colorado River. In the early days, coming up the river on a steamboat to this spot was the main way to reach the mine. It became a hotspot for bootleggers during prohibition and is another fantastic photo op.
Off-beat, fascinating and decidedly Instagrammable, the Eldorado Canyon Gold Mine tour is an adventure worth taking!
